How MyAIBackup works
A small Mac app that keeps an exact copy of your Claude history and helps you take it with you. This guide walks through everything it does, in the order you'll meet it.
The big picture
Claude keeps your history in a few different places, and each one can disappear:
- Claude Code saves your sessions as files on your Mac and deletes ones older than 30 days by default.
- claude.ai (web, desktop and phone) keeps chats, projects and memory in your Claude account. If you switch accounts, they stay behind.
- Claude Design keeps your design files in your account, and the official export doesn't include them.
MyAIBackup copies all of this into one backup on your Mac and keeps it up to date on its own. It never changes the originals and never deletes anything from your backup, so when an original disappears, your copy stays.
1. Install
- Download the app and open
MyAIBackup.dmg. - Drag MyAIBackup into Applications.
- Open it from Applications. The first time, macOS asks you to confirm because the beta isn't signed by Apple yet. The download page shows how.
MyAIBackup adds an icon to your menu bar and sets itself to start when you log in. Click the icon any time to open its window.
2. Claude Code backup: automatic
There's nothing to set up. As soon as the app opens, it copies:
- every Claude Code conversation, including command output and side tasks
- your files as they were before Claude edited them, so you can always get an old version back
- Claude's notes and settings: memory files,
CLAUDE.md, skills and add-ons - sessions from the Claude desktop app's Code and Cowork tabs
After that, it watches for changes and copies new work within about a minute. It skips caches, logs and Claude's sign-in file, which hold nothing you'd want back.
Long conversations are saved efficiently: when a session grows, only the new part is stored, and the app checks that the earlier part hasn't changed.
3. Connect claude.ai (once)
To back up chats from the web, desktop and phone apps, plus projects, memory and Claude Design files:
- In the app, under claude.ai and Claude Design, click Connect Claude account.
- A window opens on Claude's own sign-in page. Sign in the way you normally do (Google, email or SSO).
- The window closes and the first copy starts. With many chats this can take a few minutes.
From then on, the app checks for new and changed chats every 15 minutes. Click Copy now if you don't want to wait. MyAIBackup never sees your Claude password; it only reads your history, the same way the claude.ai page does.
4. Check it's working
The top of the app window always tells you, in plain words, when the last backup ran and whether anything needs your attention. Below it, What's in your backup lists what's been saved, with a short description of each kind.
A few buttons are there for when you want them:
- Back up now
- Copy the latest changes right away instead of waiting.
- Compare with originals
- Check every original file against your backup from start to finish. This also runs on its own once a day.
- Check backup health
- Read back everything in your backup to make sure nothing is damaged.
- Open backup folder
- Show the backup in Finder.
5. Read and continue old chats
Click Browse and continue to see every conversation in your backup, newest first, including ones that no longer exist in Claude. Filter by claude.ai, Claude Code or Cowork, or show only conversations that now exist only in your backup. Open one to read it like an email thread.
To pick up where you left off, click Continue in Claude. MyAIBackup copies the conversation to your clipboard and opens a new chat on claude.ai. Paste, and Claude has the full context.
Search your backup from inside Claude Code
Click Connect to Claude Code in the app once. Then, in any new Claude Code conversation, ask things like "find the chat where we planned the launch" or "what did we decide about pricing last month?". Claude Code searches your backup and reads the old conversation, even one Claude has deleted.
Get files back
- Save a copy as normal files puts a readable copy of everything in your backup, including deleted items, into "MyAIBackup Restored" in your home folder.
- Put deleted Claude Code chats back copies conversations Claude Code has deleted back to where it looks for them, so they appear in Claude Code again. It never changes a file that's still there.
6. Move to a new Claude account Beta
Switching to a new personal or work account? MyAIBackup recreates your projects in the new account, with their instructions and documents, and adds a project called Chats from (old account) that holds your old chats and what Claude remembered about you, so Claude can read them in the new account.
- Connect your old account (step 3) and wait for the first copy to finish.
- Click Use a different account and sign in to the new account.
- Under Move to another Claude account, pick the old account and click Move. If the new account has more than one workspace, choose where to put things.
Some things you still do yourself in the new account, and the app reminds you at the end:
- Reconnect tools like Slack, Gmail or Google Calendar. Only you can sign in to them.
- Scheduled routines aren't moved yet. Their full instructions are kept in your backup.
- Claude Design files are kept in your backup folder. Upload the ones you need to a new Design project.
Moving only adds to the new account. It never deletes anything from either account.
7. Cloud backup Beta
Your backup on your Mac is free. Cloud backup, part of the Personal and Pro plans, will keep an encrypted copy online so you can restore everything on a new Mac.
- Sign in with Google in the app under Cloud backup. This already works, and you'll see your Mac on your account page.
- When you sign in the first time, the app shows a recovery key. Write it down. It's the only way to open your cloud backup on another Mac, and we can't recover it for you.
- With a Personal or Pro plan, the app uploads only what's new, about once an hour, encrypted on your Mac before it leaves. Click Back up to cloud now to start right away.
- On a new Mac: install the app, sign in with Google under Cloud backup, then open Restore from cloud, choose the backup and enter your recovery key. Your files come back into "MyAIBackup Restored" in your home folder, and your old Claude Code conversations are put back so Claude Code shows them again.
Where your backup lives
Everything is in ~/Library/Application Support/MyAIBackup:
- The backup itself: the original files, stored so that each version is kept once.
- An index that records what was saved and when, with a fingerprint for every file.
- Your claude.ai and Design copies, as the original data from Claude.
Please don't edit or move files inside it. If you want a copy of your backup somewhere else, copy the whole folder.
Uninstall
- Click the menu bar icon and choose Quit MyAIBackup.
- Drag MyAIBackup from Applications to the Trash.
- Your backup stays in
~/Library/Application Support/MyAIBackupuntil you delete that folder yourself, so reinstalling picks up where you left off.
